Charles Barnard, BVSc, M.MedVet (Surgery)
Registered Specialist in Small Animal Surgery – one of only eight practicing in New Zealand
Charles qualified as a Veterinary Surgeon in 1977. After 3 years in general practice was employed as a Lecturer then Senior Lecturer at the Veterinary School in Pretoria, South Africa. During this 6 year period, he completed a Masters Degree in Small Animal Surgery and graduated from the University of Pretoria in 1986. From 1985 to 1999 he ran a Referral and General Practice in Durban.
In August 1999 Charles and Jacqui emigrated to New Zealand and have been operating as Highway Vets and Specialist Surgical Referral Centre since that time providing full medical and surgical care for small animals.
In August 2000 he was registered by the NZ Veterinary Council as a Specialist in Small Animal Surgery.
Charles is interested in all aspects of surgery especially orthopaedics and is a popular choice of specialist for many and regularly takes on referrals from other Veterinary Surgeons from all over New Zealand. Having performed surgery on small animals from as far afield as Christchurch and Taranaki.
General Practice
The General Practice component of Highway Vets offers medical diagnostics and care backed up by New Zealand Veterinary Pathology, a highly rated pathology laboratory with 24 hour turn around on blood samples. (pathology and cultures can take a little longer).
The Cattery
The Cattery with its rural outlook consists of three inter-connecting zones built around large central aviary, containing a variety of birds and guinea pigs that provide stimulating visual live entertainment for our feline guests.
Each area contains individual well appointment airy cages opening into a cosy indoor communal area and out to a colourful planted garden space furnished with plenty of lounging surfaces and viewing platforms.
Every guestroom has at least one soft warm bed, fresh toileting facilities, water and dry food available at all times. 24-hour background music is provided to enhance this home from home experience.
All needs are met for the comfort and contentment of our furry holiday makers. Special diets and medical requirements are accommodated, cuddles, grooming, one on one attention and keen observation are part of the daily routine.
